Heart pounding, hands shaking, thoughts racing: these unwelcome symptoms make life seem wearisome for those who are living with an anxiety disorder.
I have lived with one or two people in the past who suffered from anxiety, and I understand what it means to have to deal with such symptoms on almost a daily basis.
And as someone who uses CBD products, I have been asked not less than a couple of times this question: “How does CBD help with anxiety?”
Anxiety and CBD
Anxiety affects 40 million adults in the United States alone. Data suggests that it affects between 2.5% and 7% of the population of every country in the world. That’s about 1 in every 13 people worldwide, which makes anxiety disorder the most common mental health disorder known to man. This is according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
For those who are living with some form of anxiety disorder, finding a safe method for managing the symptoms is a primary concern. I can only imagine what a person with anxiety has to deal with every time anxiety attacks.
From what I’ve researched, many people with anxiety are no longer satisfied with conventional anti-anxiety medication. Most of these medications are quick-acting and offer instant relief, but they can also be addictive.
And then there are long-range medications designed to reduce anxiety symptoms over time. These are also effective, but they don’t seem to work for everyone.
And then there’s Cannabidiol, better known as CBD. As a derivative of the cannabis plant, it’s considered an excellent complementary treatment for anxiety.
What Research Says
I’ve been using CBD products for some time now (9 years), and I can say that it does have many health benefits. I’ve also read some research that points to its potential benefits for anxiety.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse or NIDA, for instance, says that CBD is good for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and can lower stress levels. Studies done on the effects of CBD on GAD has shown that it can reduce behavioral signs of anxiety, and improve physiological symptoms, such as increased heart rate.
Other studies also confirm that CBD may benefit individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD), as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It may even help with insomnia-related anxiety. This has been proven in a 2011 study on the effects of CBD on individuals with social anxiety disorder, where participants who took an oral dose of 400 mg of CBD experienced reduced anxiety levels.
As with post-traumatic stress disorder, several studies have shown that CBD has positive effects on PTSD. Some of these studies have shown that CBD can help with symptoms like replaying negative memories and nightmares. Others have looked at CBD as both a supplement to conventional treatments and a standalone treatment to PTSD.
Taking CBD for Anxiety
There are many ways you can take CBD if you’re curious about using it to help manage your anxiety symptoms, but allow me to show you a few. It’s important that you understand the pros and cons of each of these methods if you are to find the best one that will suit your needs.
First, there’s your smokables. Smoking provides an almost instantaneous effect against anxiety since it sends the Cannabinoid directly to your system. My only concern about smoking is that measuring your intake can be a bit tricky. There’s just no way you will find out whether you’re taking in the exact amount for your condition or whether you’ve taken too much. Besides, the act of smoking, even when you’re talking about CBD products, may cause lung problems.
Another way you can use CBD for anxiety is by drinking CBD coffee or tea. Since I’m a coffee lover, I would recommend CBD coffee, in particular. I drink at least a cup of a day myself, and I always find myself more focused throughout the day. I’m also more alert and yet calm whenever I have my daily dose.
How many cups of CBD coffee should you drink to feel the effects? That depends. I would suggest you try one cup every other day for at least two weeks and see how it works for you. You can then slowly increase the dosage if you feel that it’s necessary.
CBD edibles are also a good option for treating anxiety symptoms. These products usually come in the form of gummies and chocolates and are great options if you’re not into smoking or coffee. What I love the most about CBD edibles is that they can be taken easily and discreetly, whenever and wherever you want.
It’s easy not to take these things seriously since they’re just “candy,” but they’re actually just as effective as other CBD products since they contain the same Cannabidiol found in those products.
Another one of my favorites is CBD oil. This is a very popular product because it represents a convenient and accurate way to consume CBD. They usually come in a bottle with a dropper, although there are also “Daily Dose” versions that come in syringes.
Perhaps one of the advantages of CBD oil is that it uses a dropper, which lets you measure your intake with ease and accuracy. You place a drop under your tongue and let it settle there for a few moments before swallowing it. It’s also fast-acting, and results can kick in within ten minutes can last up to several hours.
I wouldn’t say that CBD doesn’t come with potential side effects. I would be lying if I did. But then all types of drugs do come with potential side effects, not just CBD. This product is generally safe, but it may cause side effects, including diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
It may also interact with other supplements and medications you may be taking, so make sure you exercise caution before using CBD.
I also wouldn’t suggest that you stop taking medications you’re currently taking without first getting approval from your doctor. CBD has a huge potential for treating anxiety symptoms, but you will only be putting yourself in a dangerous situation if you’re going to use it in a manner that’s not appropriate.
If you have anxiety and would want to try CBD products to manage your symptoms, my advice is that you ask your doctor for a go signal before making a decision. Doctors know and understand the potential of CBD as an alternative to anxiety medications, and they wouldn’t keep you from using CBD products if they knew it would benefit you.
